An outline history of infrared astronomy is provided, taking into account the discovery of infrared radiation by Herschel in 1800 and the development of PbS and Ge:Ga detectors. Suitable locations and telescopes for infrared observatories are considered and the conduction of sky surveys is discussed. A description is presented of the results obtained with the aid of infrared astronomy in a number of subjects of study, giving attention to the presence of silicates in the interstellar or circumstellar environments, extragalactic infrared sources, small solar-system bodies, and the Becklin-Neugebauer source.
