Results are presented for recent studies of the effects of urban illumination on night-sky brightness. These effects are calculated by assuming that the total light emitted by a city is proportional to its population, at least for regions of similar economic development; this assumption is shown to be approximately correct. The manner in which artificial illumination of the sky varies with distance from the city producing it is investigated, and the distances at which different urban sources produce an increase in sky brightness of 0.2 magnitude at 45-deg altitude in their direction are determined. The relations obtained are found to be in good agreement with previous results
