Methods are presented for eliminating the effect of the Balmer discontinuity in fitting UBV data to the standard nonideal UBV system through a general correlation function that is valid for all spectral types regardless of reddening and is applicable to any program star without information other than the measured UBV values. A reduction method that is linear in color index and air mass is outlined whereby systematic deviations in (U-B) index are obtained as a function of spectral type or color and, after reduction to zero air mass, are correlated unambiguously to a parameter that is a linear combination of (B-V) and (U-B). As an example, the method is applied to a large sample of standard stars, and the mean external error in (U-B) is reduced from 0.05 to 0.02 magnitude. Verification of this method by numerical simulation is demonstrated.
