The idea that coherent curvature radiation from quasars is driven by plasma waves is tested. A recent theory by Buschauer and Benford (1976) fixes constraints on local geometry of the radiating bunches, and eliminates several unknowns by assuming the radiation occurs at the local plasma frequency. Using this, the constraints seem strong enough to render the mechanism unlikely. However, other models (particularly coherent synchrotron radiation) are not ruled out.
