Scientific paper

The paper reviews experimental data and theoretical models of the solar-flare-generated interplanetary shock wave. Data on shock-wave propagation velocity, shock-front configurations, characteristics of the plasma behind the shock, the compression of this plasma ('piston' effect), and the relationship between the shock wave and flares are reviewed. The blast-wave and driven-wave models of such shock waves are described and theoretical results are compared with experimental data. Methods for determining the mass and energy of the interplanetary shock waves are discussed.
