Scientific paper
The paper reviews techniques for the observation of XUV emission from solar flares; emphasis is placed on spaceborne measurements (e.g., from Skylab, the OSO satellites, the Explorer satellites, the Helios spacecraft, etc.) using such instruments as photomultipliers, X-ray spectroheliographs, mapping heliometers, etc. Methods for extracting information on flare density and temperature from XUV data are considered. A flare-temperature model is constructed and its implications for the study of flare energy-balance are discussed.
