The importance of accurate knowledge of atomic oscillator strengths in computing reliable values for the widths of isolated ion lines broadened by plasma-electron impact is demonstrated explicitly for the case of medium- and high-density plasmas. The dependence of line width on oscillator strength is analyzed for electric dipole transitions, and the determination of oscillator strengths is reviewed. The LK coupling scheme is employed to describe certain states where the radiating electron is highly excited, the Stark widths of the N II lines at 4041.3 and 4552.5 A are calculated, and agreement between the measured and computed widths is found to be quite good.
