The latest observational and theoretical evidence which suggests the existence of a large number of partially ionized globules (PIG's) in the cores of H ii regions is presented. The consequences of this proposition to the structure of the Orion Nebula are then considered. It is suggested that the dense ionized core of M42 is caused by two major ionization fronts eating into a large mass of neutral material which contains many dense neutral globules. The ‘Hourglass’ in M8 is shown to be very similar.
