Shock effects associated with the Rochechouart crater in France were studied. Shock level was determined in thin section from petrographic analysis of each specimen. Correlations between rock types or shock level in allochthonous and autochthonous materials were ascertained. The shape of the original crater, which is now deeply eroded, is estimated from rock type and shock effect data, and the distribution of shock effects is analyzed. It is suggested that the lack of circular symmetry in the distribution of impact melts might indicate a pronounced anisotropic structure of the target, or an inclinated trajectory of the projectile, or both.
