The orbital period distribution of low mass X-ray binary systems is examined, and methods of orbital period measurement are discussed; periods of the order of a few hours are noted for many of these systems. Much of the apparent diversity of the low mass X-ray binaries is attributable to differences in luminosity or orbital inclination. There is growing evidence that the accretion disks in low mass X-ray binaries are thick and structured, and observations strongly suggest that the height of the rim varies substantially around the disk.
