An examination is undertaken of the applicability of firstand second-order Fermi acceleration to electrons in SNRs, respectively differentiating the theories of Krymsky (1977) and Axford et al (1977), on the one hand, and Scott and Chevalier (1975), on the other. The observational evidence does not exclude one or the other theory, but suggests that while both processes may occur in the observed SNRs, diffusive shock acceleration is probably the more important.
