A solution algorithm is obtained for calculating the magnetic field geometry of an Ap star based on the circular and linear polarization of its spectral lines. The algorithm is based on the conjugate gradient of Fletcher and Reeves (1964). The magnetic field geometry of an Ap star with magnetic field strength in the range 2500-5000 gauss was calculated numerically, in order to assess the efficiency of the algorithm. It is shown that the computed parameters were free from error due to variations in rotational velocity. Some advantages of the present method are discussed in comparison with the conventional practice of interpreting effective-field curves for Ap stars.
