A simple quantitative model of a nova shell is developed which consists of an equatorial ring and two polar caps. It is shown that such a model will give two-, three-, or four-peak emission-line profiles, depending on its spatial orientation, and that all these types of profile have actually been observed for various novae. Spectral and photometric observations of Nova Cygni 1975 are analyzed in the framework of this model. It is concluded that the angle between the plane of the equatorial ring of that nova's shell and the direction to earth is about 60 deg and that the ratio of the ring's outer diameter to its thickness is between 5 and 10.
