The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is characterized, surveying the results of recent observations. The early history of the observation of the LMC is traced, leading to its identification as a dwarf galaxy, related to the late barred galaxies and lacking a nucleus. The determination of the distance and absorption characteristics of the LMC is considered: current values include apparent distance modulus = 18.6 AU, absorption attributable to LMC dust = 0.1 mag, Galactic absorption toward the LMC = 0.3 mag, and approximate distance = 48 kpc. Magnitude/color diagrams of three clusters in the LMC and seven clusters in the Galaxy are compared, and the significance of weak blue LMC stars near the ZAMS is dicussed. Other features surveyed include the supermassive ionized-gas complex 30 Dor (containing the condensation Radcliffe 136), the neutral gas and the Magellanic Current, and the UV and X-ray emissions.
