H I absorption measurements made in the direction toward the supernova remnant G74.9 plus 1.2 and a point source 7 arcmin west of the SNR are used to estimate a lower limit of 12 kpc for the kinematic distance to the SNR. It is shown that the SNR is a galactic object but not subluminous and is thus more like 3C 58 than the Crab Nebula. The question of whether the point source is galactic or extragalactic is considered.
