Von Zeipel's (1924) theorem is generalized to the case of angular-velocity distributions for which the centrifugal acceleration cannot be derived from a potential. Instead of von Zeipel's result, according to which the energy flux in the radiative region of a rotating star is proportional to the effective gravity (rotational darkening), a more general relation is obtained. It is shown that - depending on the angular-velocity distribution and the opacity law - rotational darkening can be more or less pronounced than that obtained from the von Zeipel theorem. It is also possible that the radiative flux increases with decreasing effective gravity (rotational brightening).
