A method is proposed for determining the age of stellar groups whose present kinematics satisfy a certain criterion. This method is based on the properties of a common tangential space-velocity component and a common origin of the stellar groups, which have been tied together for moving groups on the grounds of the linear epicyclic theory in such a way that stars of the same origin and with the same tangential velocity component will come to reunion one or several epicycles later. It is shown that the clustering of A-type stars in the space-velocity diagram originally observed by Eggen (1963) is simply a manifestation of the reunion after one or more epicycles, or focusing, of stars belonging to a common origin and that the clusterings in physical and velocity space are only transient phenomena. A stability analysis is performed which demonstrates that the focusing phenomenon is generally stable with respect to nonlinear dynamical effects and initial dispersions in position and velocity, but partially stable in relation to the spiral gravitational field.
