The vast outpourings of hydrogen from the sun present problems with respect to the complex energy transfer relations involved. The present investigation is concerned with the study of hydrogen emission from the sun, taking into account limb prominence photographs. These events are rich in H-alpha emission at 6563 A. They are used as natural probes into the regions of nonthermodynamic equilibrium occurring between the chromosphere and corona. The considered study developed from interferometric investigations of the solar corona. Difficulties of coronal interferometry could be partly overcome with the aid of improved techniques involving the use of a solid Fabry-Perot etalon of 0.02 in. thickness for routine observations. The design and the operation of the new apparatus are discussed, taking into account also the pressure-scanning version.
