The distribution of luminous matter in the universe is considered. The most significant cluster of stars is called a galaxy. Galaxies do not exist independently but appear to be joined together in loosely defined groups or clusters. In a hierarchy of the spatial inhomogeneities in the distribution of matter, clusters of galaxies represent the next step up the hierarchy from stars and galaxies. The grouping of galaxies may be a continuous distribution ranging from binary galaxies to giant clusters with more than 10,000 member galaxies. Attention is given to the Galaxy and the Local Group, aspects of motivation for the study of clusters of galaxies, developemnts in technology, cluster identification, catalogs of clusters, questions of galactic content, the sizes of clusters, the luminosity function, cD galaxies, time scales, problems regarding the hidden mass, the classification of clusters, X-ray observations, and the Forman-Jones classification.
