Results of magnetic measurements are presented which show that the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of the Wellman meteorite (H5) varies with the position within the meteorite. The intensity of the NRM is high (approximately 100 A/m) in the outer part with a thickness of about a few cm and the remanence consists of almost a single component. However, the NRM intensity in the internal part is determined to be as low as 10 A/m and consists of three components. It is found that the directions of these three components are coherent among multiple samples. The two components with the lower coercivities are found to be magnetically very soft and were probably acquired on the earth's surface, while the magnetic stabilities of the surface magnetization and that of the hard component of the internal remanences are high and similar to each other. In addition, the stable direction of the internal magnetization is found to be almost antipodal to the surface magnetization. These findings indicate that all the remanences of the Wellman meteorite were acquired during the fall through the earth's atmosphere and on the earth's surface.
