Areal averages are computed for basalts from the Pacific (12 areas, 116 analyses) and the Atlantic (9 areas, 25 analyses). Also tabulated are 31 averages of Cenozoic, 12 of Mesozoic, 6 of Paleozoic, and 8 of Precambrian basaltic provinces throughout the world. It is concluded that (1) the bulk of oceanic basalts are silica-undersaturated, (2) there ia no consistent variation in the composition of basalt magma with time, and (3) there are no distinct types of basalt magma, but rather a continuous series from silicasaturated (tholeiitic) to silica-undersaturated (olivine-basaltic) rocks. This seems in accord with the theory that basaltic magma is formed by partial melting of the upper mantle.
