The optical properties of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 are described in detail on the basis of spectra from different epochs. NGC 4593 is found to be a member of a group of galaxies. Almost all of the members of this group detected show strong emission line activity. The implications of this finding for the origin and evolution of galactic nuclear activity are briefly discussed.
