The linear dichroism and birefringence of the interstellar medium are respectively cited as the causes of the predicted linear and circular polarization in the interstellar molecular radiofrequency absorption lines seen in the direction of radio continuum sources. The amount of linear and circular polarization expected depends on the optical depth of the line of sight, the anisotropy of the ambient interstellar radiation field, and the angle between magnetic field direction in the interstellar medium and the line of sight. The circular polarization additionally depends on the amount of linear polarization emitted by the continuum source, together with the angle between the IMF and the linear polarization vector of the background radiation.
