A 44-sq deg area has been searched for relative UV excess objects (UVXs) in five partially overlapping fields of a 70/100-cm Maksutov telescope, in order to begin the formation of a QSO sample in the South Galactic Pole (SGP). A total of 373 objects yielding a surface density of 8.6 UVX/sq deg was found with B values of less than about 20. Only the central overlapping region was used for the comparison of the surface densities of different UVX samples, and the (B about 19) density in this region is found to be about 7.2 UVX/sq deg, or about a factor of 2 larger than that found by Savage and Bolton (1979) in two 25-sq deg fields near the SGP. Spectroscopic data have uncovered 27 new QSOs, from which result the presently known surface density of QSOs in the 44-deg area amounts to 0.8 QSO/sq deg at a B value of about 19 mag, or about 1/5 of the expected surface density.
