I discuss the nature of molecular clouds, from molecular clouds themselves to ``cloud cores'', which are denser portions in molecular clouds and known to be the sites of star formation. First, I report large-scale mapping observations of two molecular clouds with the Mt. Fuji submm telescope in the 492-GHz CI line, and discuss the formation and evolution of molecular clouds. Second, I show the hierarchical structure in the Orion A giant molecular cloud (GMC) studied in 13CO, CS (1-0), and H13CO+. Third, I report a comparative study of cloud cores between the Orion A GMC, which is forming massive stars as well as low-mass stars, and those in dark clouds, which are low-mass star formation sites. Finally, by comparing our observations with Nakano's theoretical model, I discuss the meaning of turbulent dissipation and star formation.
