Selection and contamination effects in a subsample of 49 groups extracted from the new, three-dimensional catalogue of small groups of galaxies made by Huchra and Geller (1982) are considered. The sample can be subdivided into subsamples of 20 groups having the logarithm of the recession velocity W smaller than 3.2 and 29 groups with log W greater than 3.2. The 20 nearer groups are little affected by selection effects and contain only a moderate fraction of interlopers almost constant with W. The farther groups are seriously affected by selection and contamination effects. The Spearman correlation coefficients are smaller and equally or less significant for the log W greater than 3.2 subsample, implying that only Spearman values from the nearer groups are reliable.
