The sources of gamma-ray bursts are proposed to be relatively old neutron stars (older than one million years) on the basis of observational data of transient gamma-ray bursts obtained with spacecraft carrying special-purpose detectors. The time structure, energy spectrum, distribution of burst sources over the sky, and integrated flux-density distribution for various recorded gamma-ray bursts are discussed. Several energy sources associated with neutron stars which might sustain the energy requirements of gamma ray bursts include neutron star spin and accretion of matter, thermonuclear explosions of surface material enriched in light elements, elastic shear stresses in the solid crust and core, and nuclear explosions in a nonequilibrium layer abundant in free neutrons and neutron-enriched heavy nuclei. The problem of nonstable behavior of ultradense matter in strong magnetic fields is identified.
