The manned flights under the ""Intercosmos'' program became a logical continuation of the program which was begun at the end of the 1960's. The primary areas in which experiments were conducted were the physical processes in the ionosphere, the Earth's magnetosphere, and interplanetary space, the Sun and solar activity, and cosmic radiation. The insertion of a measuring probe into a medium, the properties of which are studied is one of the basic methods of research in the field of space physics. There are physical phenomena which cannot be investigated, using only small automatic satellites. These include radiation from distant astronomical objects in a wide range of wavelengths and the high energy component of galactic cosmic radiation. Either multiton automatic units or manned spacecraft are inserted into orbit. In order subsequently to create the optimal automatic instrument, it is desirable to thrust man with the performance of the first experiments. The study of optical phenomena in the upper atmosphere-the polar auroras, the middle latitudinal red arcs and equatorial glow-played a significant role in the manned part of the "Intercosmos" program.
