The concept of information capacity is used to compare the performance of different designs of astronomical polarimeter, as an aid in selecting the design which is most suited to a particular application. The example chosen to illustrate the method is the comparison of visible-region stellar polarimeters, but the method is of general applicability and the constraints applying to infrared polarimeters are also discussed.
