Observations of the IR fine-structure lines of forbidden O III and N III from M17 were made using a balloon-borne 60 cm diameter telescope and a Michelson interferometer of 0.05/cm resolution. The FWHM beam size was 1.65 arcmin. These data are combined with earlier published data on these lines from airborne and balloon observations to provide the first extensive far-IR line maps of M17 and an electron density map derived from the forbidden O III line ratios.
