Extensive parameter studies of the formation of voids in the galaxy distribution, using spherically symmetric models without dissipation and a cosmological density parameter omega of one or less in a standard cosmology, are presented. The various parameters required to specify the models are defined and discussed, and the time development of the density profiles of various isolated hole models is presented. 'Honeycomb' models allowing for the transfer of matter between adjacent cells are considered. Previous calculations for Wigner-Seitz spheres centered on clusters rather than holes are extended, and the local Virgocentric lattice cell is discussed. Conjectures for more realistic geometries are given, and the dependence of the relative density perturbation at recombination on present-day density contrasts and omega is discussed for both clusters and holes. The calculations show that deep holes resembling those recently observed can form in dissipationless systems, and can be accompanied by the formation of surrounding overdense ridges.
