The standard "Big Bang" and hierarchical paradigms for describing the
cosmos are discussed in terms of recent astrophysical discoveries. Three
criteria established by G. de Vaucouleurs in 1970 as bases for deciding
between these two cosmological models provide the main format of the
discussion.
