The study presented here extends a previous investigation of the vibrational stability of rotating configurations (Kopal, 1981) to the stability of the components of close binary systems that not only rotate but also distort each other by tidal action. To this end, differential equations that govern first-order oscillations of arbitrary spherical-harmonic symmetry are set up in Clairaut coordinates, with the radial coordinate replaced by the potential, which remains constant over level surfaces of equilibrium configurations (Kopal, 1980). The explicit form of the tide-generating potential is then set up; this, it is noted, enters the equations of motion governing small adiabatic oscillations, influenced by equilibrium tides as well as by dynamical tides.
