Surface photometry of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 5383 shows four components: an r-to-the-1/4 bulge, an exponential disk, a bar, and a lens. Spectrophotometry of the central region leads to an explanation of the luminosity excess of the bulge, by strong star formation, which is compatible with the large velocity gradients observed in that region. Systematic deviations from circular motion together with large velocity gradients of the ionized gas are confirmed by several slit spectra in the bar. Gas flow is calculated for a set of models, and the best fit with observations is held to determine the unknown mass of the bar. Of the M/L ratios derived for the four components, those of the bar and lens are similar (of the order of 8.0), indicating the existence of a similar population in the inner part of the galaxy. Mean and axisymmetric rotation curves are then compared to rotational velocities across and along the bar.
