The linear stability of star motion in spherically symmetric clusters moving in the gravitational field of a galaxy is studied, considering the galaxy in terms of a point mass and investigating the orbital plane stability of clusters with various central densities. The ranges of the three free parameters of the problem, which are the ratio between the cluster and galaxy masses, the cluster orbit eccentricity, and the ratio between cluster size and the semimajor axis of the cluster orbit, were determined with a view to stability, which is found to be favored by large cluster masses, small eccentricities, and large semimajor axes, as expected. With respect to galactic globulars, the present analysis suggests that the orbital eccentricity of a given cluster must not exceed a certain value if it is to be stable.
