The rapid variability of GeV to TeV γ-ray emission observed from AGN is a challenge for models of particle energization in the jets of these sources. Here I review the main acceleration processes proposed to operate in jets in view of their ability to account for the observations. It is emphasized that the availability of energy to the actual acceleration process is a central question of the problem. I shall also discuss the sweep-up process in collimated blast waves, which is based on the isotropisation of a relativistic particle beam. This process is found to be very attractive, at first in a physical sense, for the bulk kinetic energy of the blast wave is tapped at a level depending on the density of the ambient interstellar medium, whose structure is hence reflected in the structure of the γ-ray light curves. But also in a philosophical sense the sweep-up models are pleasing, for their temporal evolution is completely determined by the initial conditions, and thus only few parameters are needed to explain a highly structured light curve.
