We present a brief overview of in situ observations of magnetohydrodynamic waves and turbulence in the solar wind. A short introduction to the large scale structure of the heliosphere, in particular the interaction of solar wind streams, is followed by a discussion of spacecraft missions of relevance. Emphasis is placed on observable quantities of the waves and turbulence with some discussion of instrument and spacecraft limitations. We concentrate on the developing turbulence in high speed streams and discuss latitude and distance dependencies of power levels and spectral indices on a range of scales. Small scale phenomena, such as intermittency and energy transfer processes are also discussed. Some of the key results are: the dominance of large amplitude, outward propagating Alfvén waves; an active turbulent cascade, with an inertial range spectral index near 5/3, not 3/2; a reduction of normalised cross helicity with distance; significant field-aligned anisotropy; and intermittency.
