Expressions are derived for the cross sections for excitation of complex ions by electron impact. The results are expressed in terms of the R-matrix elements for hydrogenic ions with Z equals infinity and are exact, apart from relativistic effects, in the limit as Z approaches infinity. For most of the transitions of interest in ions with four or less bound electrons, the cross sections reduce to a very simple form. The method allows one to obtain cross section values for complex ions with very little computational effort, since a large number of data for hydrogenic ions with Z equals infinity exist.
