Herbig (1973) has recently suggested that the OH maser clouds associated with NML Cygnus are radiating the 1612-MHz line mostly in the hemisphere facing away from the star. Such an anisotropy, if real, might be the result of inhomogeneous pumping such as would be provided by the stellar radiation. In this paper, the behavior of a simple one-dimensional inhomogeneously pumped model is examined for an arbitrary degree of saturation. This model has been chosen, because it allows an almost complete analytic treatment, rather than for any close correspondence with reality. Thus its real purpose is to provide some insight into the general problem of nonuniform pumping by providing a relatively simple means of investigating the entire range of saturation.
