Several currently popular models for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts are mentioned and some merits and problems discussed. Special emphasis is placed upon the strength of gravitational waves emitted. While merging compact binaries (involving neutron stars or a black hole) promise strong wave signals, collapsars and He-star mergers are more problematic in this respect. We present simulation results for neutron star binary and neutron star-black hole binary coalescences. .
