DURING the International Geophysical Year, no important proton event of solar origin was detected on the Earth by the different stations ; but on the other hand, high-altitude balloon flights show that arrivals of low-energy protons to the polar regions were rather frequent events. These arrivals of protons are generally preceded by a solar flare associated with a radio outburst of type IV, and are accompanied by ionospheric absorption, total or partial, in the polar regions.
