The standard model of cosmology and space-time structure is reviewed, with a discussion of the universe space curvature constant k, low-order terms in the local expansion of R(t), the velocity-distance relation and distance scales, the primeval and present densities of the universe, the evolution of nuclear particles in the primeval epoch, and deuterium abundance. Attention is focused on the deuterium/hydrogen ratio and its implications. Alternate pathways of deuterium synthesis (cosmic rays, supernova shocks) are discussed. The background isotropic relic blackbody radiation of 2.7 K temperature is related to primeval nucleosynthesis problems. It is tentatively concluded that present evidence favors an open universe, and that cosmic density is too feeble to prevent an indefinite continuing expansion.
