The use of widely separated radio telescopes combined with digital processing of recorded signals against later incoming signals from the same source is now practical for generating interference patterns and establishing very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) practice. This is greatly aided by the existence of interstellar OH and H2O masers in H II type regions of star formation and ionized gas. The nature of these interstellar masers and their pump sources remains unknown, but they constitute useful atomic clock references for higher-precision interferometric measurements of quasars, indeterminate extended objects such as DA240, and the interstellar masers themselves.
