Two simple symmetry parameters are introduced to describe those double radio sources with an observed central object. An appropriate subsample of 21 sources is selected from a pool of 223 3C sources, and the distribution of the symmetry parameters is examined. It is concluded that the data are consistent with the existence of a single class of double sources with rms intrinsic bending of 4-18 deg and with arms which typically differ in actual length by 15-30 per cent or less. An upper limit of 0.15c on typical component speeds is obtained.
