Changes in the characteristic altitude of the F layer of the nighttime ionosphere in the presence of abrupt changes of the vertical component of the magnetic field of the solar wind are investigated. The altitude of the nighttime ionosphere is shown to change systematically with changes in the vertical component. Positive fluctuations (from south to north) lead to an increase in the altitude of the F layer, while negative fluctuations induce an opposite altitude change of about the same magnitude.
