The 3:2 resonance rotation of Mercury is investigated by extending the
general Cassini laws to a planar model. A family of equations close to
the specified resonance is obtained, and their stability is examined. On
the basis of the stability conditions an upper estimate of the ratio of
the moments of inertia of Mercury is obtained.
