The shape of Io's sodium D2 emission profile varies markedly with Io's
orbital phase, and its width suggests that the sodium cloud may be
expanding with velocities up to 18 km/sec. This offers an explanation
for at least part of the orbital phase asymmetry observed for the D-line
emission.
