By assuming synchrotron radiation losses to be an important process, even in the straight spectra of extragalactic radio sources with spectral index between -0.5 and -1.1, and by introducing a different distribution in electron energies, the observed dispersion in spectral indices can be related to a dispersion in magnetic-field strengths of the sources.
