A progress report is presented in regard to observations of stellar spectra with the S59 UV stellar spectrometer aboard the ESRO TD-1A satellite. Processing of the observations is described with emphasis on intensity and wavelength calibration, line identification, and classification of the spectra. The line profiles and equivalent widths of the Mg II lines in several spectra are calculated on the basis of a non-LTE theory of line formation; good agreement with the observations is obtained except for the peculiar emission-line stars and shell stars. The interstellar UV lines are shown to indicate large deficiencies of some metals relative to the solar abundances. Continuous UV interstellar extinction curves are determined using observations of seven pairs of reddened-unreddened stars with spectral types ranging from O9.5 to B2. Individual spectra are discussed in more detail for alpha Cygni and gamma-2 Velorum.
