The present state of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy is briefly surveyed. The historical background of this astronomy is summarized, and the source catalog of VHE gamma-ray sources is presented. Recent results on three of the best-established VHE sources, i.e., the Crab Nebula, Cygnus X-3, and Hercules X-1, are briefly discussed.
